Dignity and Pride in Every Chapter:
Experiences and Concerns of Older LGBTQ+ Adults
Published June 4, 2026
Today, nearly one in ten U.S. adults (9%) identifies as part of the LGBTQ+ community (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or something other than heterosexual). Scholarly research shows that this number is likely underreported on the population of this community. Although most popular portrayals of LGBTQ+ people focus on young adults, a substantial share of this population is navigating their next chapter as older adults.
Many of the issues important to older LGBTQ+ adults mirror the priorities of the older American population in general — health care, social connections, finances (especially the cost of retirement), and housing options that meet their needs. But this population also has unique challenges, such as experiencing discrimination in health, work, and caregiving settings. This digital experience unpacks data that shed light on the concerns, priorities, and day-to-day lives of older LGBTQ+ adults.
